RIP Shigeru Mizuki, manga creator: 1922-2015

Shigeru MizukiShigeru Mizuki, a comic author and artist famed in his homeland of Japan for his manga GeGeGe no Kitarō, has died. He was 93.

GeGeGe no Kitarō ran from 1967 to 1969, following on from the precursor Hakaba Kitarō that was created by Mizuki in 1960. From the sixties to the present day GeGeGe no Kitarō inspired a broad range of screen adaptations both animated and live-action, becoming something of a national institution in the process.

GeGeGe no Kitarō offers a humorous treatment of yokai, the weird and wonderful creatures that inhabit Japanese folklore. The topic was of great interest to Mizuki, who authored multiple books on the subject of yokai outside of his work in manga.
